Funeral

Funeral Services – Please call the parish office. If you have already made arrangements with a funeral director, a staff member will coordinate with them to meet your needs. Assistance with music is available on request.

Funeral Liturgy – Catholics celebrate funerals formally with two ceremonies. Ideally the family and friends gather for a Vigil service the night before the funeral mass. This can take place at the Church or funeral home. It is a service of prayer, readings, reflection and an opportunity for family to reflect and share stories. The Funeral Mass, or the Mass of the Resurrection, is celebrated only in the Church and will be very similar to our normal Sunday masses. Catholics can be cremated or have the body present in a casket for both ceremonies. We do not call these “Celebrations of Life” for we are in fact celebrating our faith in the Jesus Christ in which the deceased lived. After the Mass of the Resurrection burial or inurnment would take place. Catholics are to be buried or interred within a cemetery, this includes cremains. Keeping cremated remains at home is to be avoided, as many get lost or forgotten as people move from homes. As well the cemetery offers a place in which remains will be safe and be remembered. Cremains are now permitted to be divided into two urns if there is a pastoral need, e.g. person is originally from another city or state and wished for some remains to be placed there. However, the remains still need to be interred within a cemetery. Cremains are not permitted to be placed into jewelry or such, nor to be spread outside.
Memorial Services are also an option. The service consists of readings, prayers and a short reflection. The service may be celebrated at the Church or Funeral home.
Consider preplanning the Funeral liturgies in advance. Once a death occurs there is a lot of emotions, stress and other matters that need to be taken care of. Pre-selecting the readings and music will make it easier on the survivors. Call the parish to make an appointment. The readings can be seen lower on this page.

Priests will meet with the Eulogists prior to Mass reminding them of the five-minute policy. Should Eulogists go over a five minute period, the priest will intercede with the speaker to bring the eulogy to an end.
  2. If there are more than 2 eulogies to be given, that the remaining eulogies be given after the funeral Mass has been completed;
