OLS Parish

LETTER FROM FR. BOB

Dear Parish Community,

Three years ago the Diocese of Reno changed the age in which the Sacrament of Confirmation is to be conferred. Previously, it was celebrated in the 10th grade. However, the decision was made to move it to 7th grade. The goal is that this will conflict less with school and sports activities and also incentivize parishes to develop their Youth Ministry programs. We on Parish Staff have been in transition for two years now, with several hiccups, to accomplish this goal.

The preparation still remains a two year process. This Fall first year preparation will begin in 6th grade and the second year confirmation preparation will be for grades 8-10. Preparation will take place for our children in Public and Home Schools within the Catholic Religious Education (CRE) program. Children in our school and BMCHS will receive their preparation through their normal religious education classes.

Service hours will no longer be required, rather households will be required to attend “Family Faith Events” (FFE’s) within the parish with the goal of building up the community. These events will include Reconciliation Services, Advent Wreath making and many others. We will be having an information day for all families of Confirmation students in September to explain it more fully. Of course, as Catholics we are all obligated to attend the weekend masses as well so we do expect to see kids preparing for Confirmation attending masses on weekends with their families. We will also provide retreats for the kids in Confirmation; stay tuned for more information on those.

Youth Ministry will start up again this fall. We have a new coordinator, Mrs. Glaicy Morrison. There will be fun activities, service projects along with spiritual growth. Events and happenings will be posted on our website, social media and bulletin, and as well through our Evangelus network.

I look forward to the support of not only those households directly connected to Confirmation, but also from the whole parish. The whole parish has a role in forming our youth directly through  participation in these ministries, and indirectly through the example given in church and in the wider community.

Peace,

Fr. Robert W. Chorey
